Summer Reading Club

What is the Summer Reading Club?

It is an opportunity to encourage children to keep reading through t
he summer.

  • It is a social and intellectual outlet

  • It staves off the
"Summer Brain Drain" and cries of "I'm bored!"

  • It reinforces the fact that Libraries can be about fun,
as well as being a resource for school.

  • It is a source of free or low cost activities that are fun and educational.

  • It helps strengthen Family Literacy

Wow, this sounds expensive

Everyone who has children knows that entertainment is expensive.
We also know that quality fun and educational opportunities are expensive too.

When you're at your library, you are in one of the best places for "edutainment"... educational entertainment, free of charge.

We have books, magazines, computers, shows and classes...
all for you and your family.

How can I sign up?

Visit your local library!  They'll be happy to help.

You can also take the parent pledge and spend time as a reading partner

What is Family Literacy?

Family Literacy is an educational program in which parent and child learn and grow together. Family Literacy programs exist in every county of the Commonwealth and all address the literacy needs of the family while promoting parents' involvement in their roles with their community, workplace and family. The following is a summary of the content of a Family Literacy program.

  • Early Childhood Education Child-centered and developmentally appropriate activities Literacy-rich learning environment Support of emergent literacy with a wide range of activities and relationships
  • Adult Education Individualized learning activities focused on improving literacy skills Study in Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED Preparation and pre-employability skills
  • Parent Education and Parent and Child Together Time Parents and children learn and grow together Parents and children participate in literacy activities every day Parents learn and share skills necessary for positive parenting Parent learn to enhance their child's school readiness and school-related activities
Integrated Planning

Integrated lesson planning is a unique and critical characteristic of family literacy. The benefits of integrating parents' lessons with their children's lessons include providing a wide range of shared experiences, giving parents and children common topics about which to have conversations and increasing the use of the family as a vehicle for education.

One of the beliefs underlying family literacy is that adult education, parent education, early childhood education and parent and child play are essential components to enhance learning within a family. The Integrated Lesson Plans that are included in each chapter of this manual could be used in a variety of ways by library or family literacy staff. The adult or parent education examples could be adult book club discussion starters or could provide a theme for a display of new books for adults. It also could be used as a guide in helping adults select books that relate to topics their children are exploring.
